Which subject did you find hardest in college, and how did you deal with it?
Name a genuinely hard subject, explain briefly why it was hard for you, and describe the specific steps you took to get through it. The method you used is what the interviewer is assessing.
Explain it simply
Everyone has a subject that troubled them. The interviewer is not judging the subject; they want to see how you behave when something does not come easily.
Avoid picking a subject central to the job you are applying for if you still struggle with it. If it is central, show that you have now got on top of it. Focus your answer on the action: study groups, YouTube lectures, past papers, asking a senior, practice problems.
Example
Situation: Ishaan, a CSE student, found Theory of Computation hard in fourth semester.
Task: Explain the struggle and the recovery honestly.
Action: He says: "Theory of Computation was hardest because it is abstract and I could not picture automata. I scored poorly in the first internal. I then drew state diagrams for every example, watched NPTEL lectures, and made a study group of four where each of us explained one unit. In the end-semester exam I scored 71."
Result: The interviewer sees a clear learning method he can reuse on the job.
What to say in the interview
"X was hardest for me because... I fixed it by doing A and B, and my result improved to C."
Common mistakes
- Saying no subject was hard.
- Blaming the teacher.
- Describing the difficulty without any action taken.
