Why did you choose your branch of engineering?
Give the honest reason, even if it was partly marks or family advice, then show what made you genuinely interested once you started and how that interest connects to this job.
Explain it simply
Many Indian students pick a branch based on JEE or CET rank, parents' advice or what seats were left. Interviewers know this. Pretending you dreamed of electrical engineering since Class 5 often sounds false.
The better answer is honest about the start and strong about the middle: what you discovered you liked once you were in it, and what you did about it (a project, an internship, a club). End by connecting that interest to the role.
Example
Situation: Sahil got ECE through counselling because CSE seats were full at his preferred college.
Task: Answer honestly without sounding like he has no interest in his field.
Action: He says: "Honestly, my rank decided part of it. But in second year the microprocessors lab changed things for me; I enjoyed seeing code control real hardware. I then built a home automation project on an ESP32 and did an internship on embedded firmware. That is why an embedded software role like this one is my first choice."
Result: The interviewer respects the honesty and sees genuine, proven interest.
What to say in the interview
"Partly it was my rank, I'll be honest. But once I started, I found X interesting, so I did Y and Z. That's what brings me to this role."
Common mistakes
- Inventing a lifelong passion you cannot back up.
- Saying it was purely your parents' choice and stopping there.
- Showing no link between your branch and the job.
