When can you join if you are selected?
Give a clear, realistic date or window, mentioning anything that affects it, such as final exams, result dates or relocation. Show you are keen to join soon without promising what you cannot do.
Explain it simply
For a fresher, the main things that decide your joining date are final semester exams, results or provisional certificates, and moving to a new city. Companies plan training batches around these.
Be specific: "My last exam is on 20 May. I can join any time from 1 June." If the company needs a document you will only get later, such as a degree certificate, say when you expect it.
Example
Situation: Sakshi, a final-year student, is asked this in an off-campus HR round in March.
Task: Give a clear joining window.
Action: She says: "My final exams end on 28 May, and results usually come by the end of June. I can join from 3 June, and I'll be able to share my provisional certificate once results are out. I'll need a few days to move to Pune, which I've already started planning."
Result: HR can slot her into the June training batch straight away.
What to say in the interview
"My exams end on X, so I can join from Y. My provisional certificate will be available by Z. I've already started planning the move."
Common mistakes
- Saying "whenever you want" and then asking for a delay.
- Not knowing your own exam schedule.
- Forgetting relocation time.
