Interview Q&A / HR & Behavioral

BeginnerQuick answer1 min readUpdated 3 Oct 2026

What is the last thing you learned on your own?

SHORT ANSWER

Name something recent and specific you learned outside your syllabus, why you chose it, how you learned it, and how you have used it. It can be technical or not, as long as it shows curiosity.

Explain it simply

This question tests self-driven learning. A good answer is recent (last few months), specific, and has some application.

It does not have to be technical. Learning Excel pivot tables, basic Kannada for a move to Bengaluru, or touch typing all count if you can describe how and why. Technical topics related to the job are a bonus.

Example

Situation: Mohit wanted to understand how the UPI payments he used every day work.

Task: Learn the basics on his own.

Action: He read NPCI's public material and a few engineering blogs, and drew a diagram of the flow between the payer app, banks and NPCI. He then built a small mock payment flow in Python with a fake bank ledger to understand idempotency, so a retried request does not charge twice.

Result: He can now explain how a UPI payment moves between the apps and banks, and he used the idempotency idea in a college project's order API.

What to say in the interview

"Recently I learned X on my own because I was curious about Y. I learned it by doing A, and I used it in B."

Common mistakes

  • Naming something from your syllabus.
  • Something from years ago.
  • Something you cannot discuss in follow-up questions.
