If you had to choose, would you prefer development, testing or support, and why?
State your preference with a reason tied to your skills, then make clear you are open to any role the company assigns and that every role teaches something useful. Flexibility matters for freshers.
Explain it simply
Large IT companies often assign freshers to development, testing or support based on project needs. HR asks this partly to know your preference and partly to check you will not quit if you get your second choice.
It is fine to prefer development. Just show you understand that testing teaches how systems break and support teaches how users actually use the product, and that you would take either seriously.
Example
Situation: Manish prefers development but knows he may land in testing.
Task: Express a preference without sounding rigid.
Action: He says: "I would prefer development, because I enjoyed building the backend for my project and I practise coding daily. But I know testing teaches you how a system fails, which makes you a better developer later. If I am placed in testing or support, I will learn that well and keep building my development skills alongside."
Result: HR notes his preference and also notes he is flexible, which is what they wanted to hear.
What to say in the interview
"I'd prefer X because of my experience with Y. That said, I'm open to any role; testing and support both teach things a developer needs."
Common mistakes
- Saying you will only do development.
- Saying you have no preference at all.
- Speaking of testing or support as lesser work.
