Interview Q&A / HR & Behavioral

IntermediateQuick answer1 min readUpdated 3 Oct 2026

Tell me about a goal you set and did not achieve.

SHORT ANSWER

Describe a real goal, why you set it, what you did, why you fell short, and what you learned about planning or effort. End with how you adjusted and what you achieved next.

Explain it simply

Missing a goal is normal. The interviewer is checking how you set goals and how you react when you miss them. Maybe the goal was unrealistic, or you misjudged your time, or something outside your control happened.

Be honest about your part, and show that you changed your approach afterwards: smaller milestones, better tracking, earlier start.

Example

Situation: In second year, Pallavi aimed to clear the AWS Cloud Practitioner exam in one month alongside semester exams.

Task: Get certified in time for an internship application.

Action: She studied for the first two weeks, then semester exams took over and she stopped. She moved the exam date twice and finally missed the internship deadline. Looking back, she realised she had no weekly plan. She then broke the syllabus into eight weekly targets with an hour a day after exams.

Result: She cleared the certification three months later and used the same weekly-target method for placement preparation.

What to say in the interview

"I aimed to do X by a date and missed it because I hadn't planned for Y. Now I break goals into weekly targets, and that helped me achieve Z."

Common mistakes

  • Picking a goal that does not matter.
  • Blaming only outside circumstances.
  • Not showing what changed afterwards.
