Interview Q&A / HR & Behavioral

IntermediateQuick answer1 min readUpdated 3 Oct 2026

Are you planning to do an MBA or MS in the next couple of years?

SHORT ANSWER

Be honest but reassuring. If you have no immediate plans, say so and focus on gaining work experience. If you might study later, say it is a long-term idea and that you plan to stay and grow here first.

Explain it simply

Companies spend months training freshers. If you leave in a year for an MS, that investment is lost, so HR asks this to judge retention.

Do not lie, but you also do not need to share every possibility. If higher studies is a distant idea, say that experience comes first and any decision is years away. If you have already applied abroad, it is fairer to be upfront, because the truth usually comes out.

Example

Situation: Tanvi has thought about an MBA someday but has no plans yet.

Task: Answer honestly without raising a retention red flag.

Action: She says: "Not in the near future. I want hands-on industry experience first; many good MBA programmes prefer candidates with a few years of work anyway. My focus now is to learn as much as possible here. If I consider an MBA later, it would be to grow into a management role, ideally within the same company."

Result: HR is comfortable that she is not a short-term joiner.

What to say in the interview

"Not in the near future. I want to build real work experience first. If I consider it later, it would be to grow in my career here, not to leave it."

Common mistakes

  • Saying "yes, next year" without thinking about how it sounds.
  • Lying while GRE scores are already on your LinkedIn.
  • Over-explaining and sounding unsure.
