Interview Q&A / HR & Behavioral

IntermediateQuick answer1 min readUpdated 3 Oct 2026

How would you rate yourself out of 10 in your main programming language?

SHORT ANSWER

Give an honest middle-to-high number such as 6 or 7, then explain what you are good at and what you still need to learn. Never say 9 or 10 unless you can survive expert-level questions.

Explain it simply

This is a trap dressed as a simple question. Say 9 and the interviewer will ask hard questions until you fail. Say 3 and you sound unprepared.

A thoughtful 6 or 7 with reasons works best. Explain what that number covers ("comfortable with OOP, collections, exceptions") and what it does not ("I have not worked with multithreading in production"). This shows that you understand how deep the language goes.

Example

Situation: Nikhil lists Java as his main skill.

Task: Give a rating that is honest and defendable.

Action: He says: "I would rate myself 7. I am comfortable with OOP concepts, collections like HashMap and ArrayList, exception handling and writing small Spring Boot APIs, which I used in my project. I would not give myself more because I have only read about concurrency and JVM tuning, and I have not used them in real work yet."

Result: The interviewer asks HashMap and exception questions, which he answers, and appreciates that he admitted the gaps.

What to say in the interview

"I would say 7. I am comfortable with A, B and C. I would not go higher because I haven't worked much with D and E yet."

Common mistakes

  • Rating yourself 9 or 10 as a fresher.
  • Giving a number with no explanation.
  • Underrating yourself to seem humble.
