Are you willing to relocate?
If you are, say yes clearly and mention that you have thought about it. If you have a real constraint, state it honestly and offer what flexibility you can. Do not say yes if you will refuse the posting later.
Explain it simply
Large companies post freshers wherever projects are: Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune, Noida, sometimes smaller cities. HR asks this because candidates who refuse a location after joining cost them time and money.
A confident "yes" with a reason ("I lived in a hostel for four years; I'm used to managing on my own") is strong. If there is a genuine constraint, such as a parent who needs care, say so honestly at this stage rather than after the offer.
Example
Situation: Ankit is from Lucknow and is interviewing with a company that has offices in five cities.
Task: Answer clearly and convincingly.
Action: He says: "Yes, I'm open to any location. I studied in Bhopal and lived in a hostel for four years, so living away from home is not new. My family is supportive. If I have a choice, Pune or Hyderabad would be my preference, but I'll join wherever the project needs me."
Result: HR notes him as flexible, with a stated preference they can try to accommodate.
What to say in the interview
"Yes, I'm open to relocating. I've lived away from home during college, so I'm comfortable with it. If there's a choice, I'd prefer X, but I'm flexible."
Common mistakes
- Saying yes now and refusing the posting later.
- Giving a hesitant "maybe, depending on..." with no clarity.
- Listing too many conditions.
