Are you okay with signing a service agreement or bond?
Ask for the key details, such as duration, amount and conditions, then say you are fine with it if it is reasonable, because you plan to stay and grow. Read the agreement carefully before signing.
Explain it simply
Some Indian companies ask freshers to sign a bond or service agreement, often one to two years, with a payment if you leave early. Companies say it covers training costs. Terms vary widely.
In the interview, show that you are not planning to leave soon, and that you will read the terms. It is fine to ask how long it is and what amount is involved. Never sign anything (or hand over original certificates) without reading it fully and discussing it with family if needed.
Example
Situation: Nitin is asked about a bond in an HR round for a graduate trainee role.
Task: Respond positively while protecting himself.
Action: He says: "I am fine with a reasonable service agreement, since I am planning to stay and build my career here. Could you tell me the duration and the conditions? I would like to read the agreement before signing." HR explains it is 18 months with a fixed amount payable if he resigns earlier.
Result: HR sees commitment, and Nitin gets the information he needs to decide.
What to say in the interview
"I'm comfortable with a reasonable agreement since I plan to stay and grow here. Could you share the duration and terms so I can read them before signing?"
Common mistakes
- Agreeing without asking any details.
- Reacting negatively, as if you plan to leave soon.
- Signing without reading, or giving original documents without asking why.
