Tell me about a strength of yours that can sometimes become a weakness.
Choose a real strength, describe a time it went too far, and explain how you now keep it in balance. This shows self-awareness without inventing a fake weakness.
Explain it simply
Every strength has a downside when overused. Thoroughness can become slowness, confidence can become not listening, helpfulness can become doing everyone's work except your own.
The interviewer wants to see that you understand yourself well enough to notice this. Name the strength, give the moment it hurt you, and say what you do differently now. This is easier to answer honestly than the plain weakness question.
Example
Situation: Meera is known in her group for being thorough.
Task: Show that she knows the cost of that strength.
Action: She says: "In my third-year mini project I kept rewriting our report to make it perfect, and we submitted one day late, losing marks. Since then I set a time limit for each section and a 'good enough' checklist agreed with the team. In my final-year project we submitted two days early, and I still did a careful final review."
Result: The interviewer sees a candidate who knows her habits and manages them.
What to say in the interview
"My thoroughness is a strength, but it once made me miss a deadline. Now I set time limits and agree what 'done' means before I start."
Common mistakes
- Giving a fake weakness like "I work too hard".
- Describing the problem but no fix.
- Choosing a strength the job does not need.
