What do you think makes a good leader?

SHORT ANSWER

A good leader sets a clear direction, listens, supports the team, takes responsibility when things go wrong and shares credit when they go right. Give an example of someone you have seen do this.

Explain it simply

This question tests your values and what kind of manager you would want to become. Keep it practical, not textbook.

Pick three or four qualities and back them with a real person you have watched: a teacher, a senior, an internship manager, a coach. Then say which of those qualities you are trying to build in yourself.

Example

Situation: Sunil is asked this in a managerial round.

Task: Give a practical answer with a real role model.

Action: He says: "A good leader makes the goal clear, listens before deciding, and takes the blame publicly while giving credit publicly. My college cricket captain did this. When we lost the inter-college semi-final, he told the coach the batting order was his mistake, though two of us had got out to careless shots. Next season everyone played harder for him. I try to copy that, especially taking responsibility first."

Result: The interviewer sees clear values and a model he is actively following.

What to say in the interview

"Clear direction, listening, taking responsibility, and sharing credit. I saw this in X, who... I try to do the same by..."

Common mistakes

  • Listing qualities with no example.
  • Naming a famous person you know nothing personal about.
  • Describing leadership only as giving orders.
