Tell me about a time you showed leadership.
Pick a situation where you guided others towards a result, even without a formal title. Explain the goal, what you did to organise or motivate people, a problem you handled, and the outcome.
Explain it simply
Freshers often think leadership means being a class representative or club president. It does not. Leadership is getting a group to a result: planning, motivating, deciding, and taking responsibility when things go wrong.
A hostel cricket tournament, a fest event, a study group or a group project all count. Show what you did that would not have happened without you.
Example
Situation: Before the tech fest, Deepak's team was supposed to run the coding contest, but registrations were low a week before.
Task: As event coordinator, increase sign-ups and run the contest smoothly.
Action: He split his five volunteers into pairs to visit each department's classes, created a WhatsApp poster and a Google Form, and set up a mock contest for first-years who were nervous. On event day he made a checklist for the lab setup and kept one volunteer on standby for system issues.
Result: Registrations went from 40 to 160, and the contest ran without a single system failure.
What to say in the interview
"I led X when we faced Y. I organised the team by doing A, solved B, and we ended with result C."
Common mistakes
- Choosing a story where you had a title but did nothing.
- Describing what the team did with no clear leadership action from you.
- Saying you have never led anything.
