What would you do if a client asked you a question you could not answer?
Be honest that you do not know yet, tell them when you will get back, find the answer from the right person or source, and reply on time. Never guess on facts that matter.
Explain it simply
Freshers often fear looking unprepared, so they guess. A wrong answer to a client can cost far more than an honest "let me check".
Use a simple pattern: acknowledge the question, say you will confirm, give a time, and follow through. Write down the question exactly so you do not miss details. Later, learn the topic so you can answer next time.
Example
Situation: In his first client call during an internship, Sahil was asked whether the app supported a certain bank's net banking.
Task: Answer correctly without guessing.
Action: He said: "I want to give you the right answer, so let me confirm with our payments team and get back to you by 4 p.m. today." He noted the question, asked the payments lead, and emailed the client at 3:30 with the answer and a link to the supported bank list.
Result: The client thanked him for the quick, accurate reply, and his manager pointed to it as the right way to handle such questions.
What to say in the interview
"I'd say I want to give an accurate answer, note the question, tell them when I'll get back, find out from the right person and reply on time."
Common mistakes
- Guessing to look confident.
- Saying "I don't know" and stopping there.
- Promising a time and missing it.
