What matters more to you right now, salary or learning?
For a fresher, say learning and growth matter most because they build long-term value, while acknowledging that fair pay matters too. Give an example of choosing learning over short-term gain.
Explain it simply
The interviewer is not asking you to say money does not matter; everyone needs to pay rent. They are checking your priorities for the first few years.
Early in a career, skills compound like interest: what you learn in the first two years affects your salary for the next ten. Say that, show you mean it with a past choice, and keep the answer balanced.
Example
Situation: Manasi is asked this by a startup offering slightly less than an MNC.
Task: Answer in a balanced and believable way.
Action: She says: "Right now learning matters more, though fair pay matters too. In third year I chose an unpaid research internship with a professor over a paid data-entry internship, because I wanted real analysis work. That project became the main topic in every interview I had. I see the first two years of my career the same way."
Result: The interviewer sees a real decision that matches her words.
What to say in the interview
"At this stage learning matters more, because it shapes my growth for years. Pay matters too. For example, I once chose X over a paid option because..."
Common mistakes
- Saying salary does not matter at all.
