Interview Q&A / HR & Behavioral

What are your hobbies and interests?

SHORT ANSWER

Name one or two hobbies you actually do regularly and say what you get from them. Be ready for follow-up questions, because interviewers often test whether the hobby is real.

Explain it simply

Hobbies show what you choose to do with free time, which says something about discipline and curiosity. The trap is listing "reading, travelling, music" and then failing when asked which book you read last.

Only mention what you can talk about for two minutes. Cricket, cooking, chess, running, drawing, a YouTube channel with 40 subscribers: all fine. Add one line on what it gives you, such as focus, fitness or patience.

Example

Situation: Ananya lists "reading" on her resume and is asked about it.

Task: Show that the hobby is real and says something about her.

Action: She says: "I read mostly non-fiction, about one book a month. The last one was Atomic Habits; the idea of making a habit easy to start helped me finally practise coding for 30 minutes daily. I also play badminton three evenings a week at the college court, which keeps me fresh during exam season."

Result: When the interviewer asks a follow-up about the book, she answers immediately, and the hobby adds credibility rather than doubt.

What to say in the interview

"I play X regularly and I read Y. The last thing I read was Z, and it helped me with..."

Common mistakes

  • Listing hobbies you do not actually do.
  • Naming only passive ones like watching web series with nothing to say about them.
  • Writing ten hobbies on the resume.
