How did you deal with being rejected in an earlier placement interview?
Admit it calmly, explain what you learned about the gap, describe what you did to fix it, and show that you came back better. Rejection handled well shows resilience.
Explain it simply
During placement season most students face several rejections. If the interviewer asks, it is not a trap; they want to see how you bounce back.
Do not criticise the other company. Name the reason you think you were rejected, what you changed, and how you feel about it now.
Example
Situation: In the first week of placements, Akash cleared the aptitude round of a product company but was rejected after the technical interview.
Task: Understand why and avoid repeating it.
Action: He wrote down every question he was asked that night. He realised he could solve problems but could not explain time complexity or talk while coding. For the next two weeks he practised solving problems aloud with a friend acting as interviewer and revised complexity for all common patterns.
Result: In the next interview, the panel complimented how clearly he explained his approach, and he got the offer.
What to say in the interview
"I was rejected in my first technical interview. I noted every question, saw that my gap was X, practised Y for two weeks, and in the next interview Z happened."
Common mistakes
- Saying the earlier interviewer was unfair.
- Pretending you have never been rejected.
- Sounding bitter or discouraged.
