Interview Q&A / HR & Behavioral

Is it okay to ask the interviewer how you performed?

SHORT ANSWER

It is fine to ask for one area to improve, framed as wanting to learn, but avoid asking directly whether you are selected. Many interviewers cannot share results, so accept a general answer gracefully.

Explain it simply

"Did I get the job?" puts the interviewer in an awkward spot; they often cannot say, and the decision may involve others. But "Is there any area you'd suggest I strengthen?" is different. It shows you want to grow.

Ask it only if time allows, and accept whatever answer you get, even "you did fine". Some company policies do not allow feedback, so do not push.

Example

Situation: At the end of a technical round, Nisha wanted to know where she could improve.

Task: Ask for feedback without putting pressure on the interviewer.

Action: She asked: "Before we finish, is there any area you would suggest I strengthen, whatever the outcome?" The interviewer said her solutions were correct but she should explain her approach before starting to code.

Result: She practised talking through her approach for the next interview and got positive comments on clarity.

What to say in the interview

"Is there any area you'd suggest I work on, whatever the outcome? I'd find that useful."

Common mistakes

  • Asking "Am I selected?"
  • Arguing with the feedback.
  • Pushing when the interviewer says they cannot share.
