How would you explain a technical concept to a non-technical client?
Find out what they need to decide or understand, avoid jargon, use an everyday comparison, focus on what it means for their business, and check whether they understood. Keep it short.
Explain it simply
Clients care about results: cost, time, risk, what their users see. They do not care how your database is indexed.
Start from what they want to know. Use an analogy from daily life, explain the effect on them, and check by asking a question. Drawing a simple picture often helps. If they want more detail, go deeper step by step.
Example
Situation: During her internship, Mansi had to explain to a shop owner why his website was slow on mobile.
Task: Explain the issue in a way he could act on.
Action: She said: "Your product photos are very large files, like sending a full photo album when the customer only wants a thumbnail. On mobile data, that takes time, and customers leave before the page opens. If we shrink the images, the page should load much faster, and it will take about two days." She then showed a before-and-after on her phone.
Result: He approved the work immediately, and page load time dropped noticeably after the change.
What to say in the interview
"I'd start with what they need to decide, use an everyday comparison, focus on what it means for their business, and check that they understood."
Common mistakes
- Using technical jargon.
- Explaining every detail when they only need the outcome.
- Not checking for understanding.
