Interview Q&A / HR & Behavioral

How do you ask about salary, bond or working hours without sounding negative?

SHORT ANSWER

Ask at the right stage, usually the HR round or after an offer, frame it as wanting to understand the role fully, and keep it factual and brief. Pair it with interest in the work.

Explain it simply

These are fair questions; you need to know them before you accept a job. The problem is only when and how you ask.

Ask HR, not the technical interviewer. Lead with interest in the role, then ask for facts: "Could you share the salary structure and whether there is a service agreement?" Avoid emotional or suspicious wording like "Is there any catch?".

Example

Situation: Vivek, in his HR round, wanted to know about the bond and shift timings before accepting.

Task: Get the information without sounding uninterested.

Action: He said: "I'm keen on this role. To plan properly, could you share the shift timings for the first project, and whether there is a service agreement and its duration?" HR explained both, and he followed up asking about the training period.

Result: He got clear answers and accepted the offer knowing exactly what he was signing.

What to say in the interview

"I'm keen on this role. To plan properly, could you share the salary structure and whether there's a service agreement? I'd like to understand the full picture."

Common mistakes

  • Asking these in the technical round.
  • Asking with suspicion, like "Is there any catch?"
  • Never asking and being surprised after joining.
