Interview Q&A / HR & Behavioral

BeginnerQuick answer1 min readUpdated 3 Oct 2026

Do you prefer working alone or in a team?

SHORT ANSWER

Say you are comfortable with both, then show when each works best, giving a short example of each. Most jobs need deep individual focus on tasks and good coordination with the team.

Explain it simply

Real work mixes both. You write your code or analysis alone, then you review it, discuss it and integrate it with others. Picking one extreme sounds like a mismatch for half the job.

Give a balanced answer with proof: one time you did well alone and one time the team did better than you could have alone. If you honestly lean one way, say so, and show you can do the other.

Example

Situation: Sanjana is asked this in an HR round for a QA engineer role.

Task: Show she can handle both modes.

Action: She says: "I like both, for different parts of work. When I wrote test cases for my internship project, I needed quiet focus and finished 60 cases in two days. But when we found a payment bug, sitting with the developer and the analyst together got it solved in an hour, which none of us would have done alone that fast."

Result: The interviewer sees a balanced, realistic working style.

What to say in the interview

"Both, honestly. I like focused time for tasks like X, and I value the team for things like Y. For example..."

Common mistakes

  • Saying you hate teamwork.
  • Saying you cannot work without others.
  • Giving no example of either.
