Interview Q&A / HR & Behavioral

BeginnerQuick answer1 min readUpdated 3 Oct 2026

Tell me about a successful team project and your role in it.

SHORT ANSWER

Briefly describe the project and its goal, explain your specific role and contributions, mention one challenge the team overcame, and finish with a measurable result.

Explain it simply

This question checks two things: can you work in a team, and can you describe your own part clearly within it. Pick a project where the result is clear, such as a hackathon finish, an event that ran smoothly, or a working app people used.

Use "we" for team results and "I" for your own actions. Mention how the team divided work and solved a problem together.

Example

Situation: Shreya's team of four entered a 24-hour college hackathon.

Task: Build a working prototype, with Shreya handling the frontend and the final pitch.

Action: She built the React screens for a lost-and-found app for campus, coordinated with the backend teammate on the API format early to avoid surprises, and at 4 a.m., when the image upload broke, switched to storing links instead so the demo could work. She then presented the pitch.

Result: The team finished second out of 30 teams, and the college asked them to pilot the app in the hostel.

What to say in the interview

"We built X for Y. My role was A. When we hit problem B, I did C. We finished with result D."

Common mistakes

  • Using only "we" so your role is unclear.
  • Taking credit for the entire team's work.
  • Choosing a project with no clear outcome.
