How would you handle a task you have never done before?
Clarify what is expected and by when, research how it is usually done, break it into small steps, try a small version early, and ask for help or a review at the right points instead of struggling silently.
Explain it simply
In the first job, most tasks will be new. Managers want to know you will not freeze, and also will not disappear for a week and come back with something wrong.
First make sure you understand the goal. Look at existing examples in the codebase or documents, read up, and try a small piece. Share early progress with your lead so mistakes are caught early. Time-box being stuck: if you have tried for an hour or two without progress, ask.
Example
Situation: In his internship, Gautam was asked to set up automated email reports, something he had never done.
Task: Deliver it within a week.
Action: He asked his mentor what the report should contain and who would receive it, found an existing scheduled job in the codebase to copy the pattern from, and built a version that emailed only himself on day two. He showed it to his mentor, who pointed out a timezone issue. He fixed it and rolled it out on day five.
Result: The report went live two days early and is still used by the team.
What to say in the interview
"I'd clarify the goal, look for existing examples, break it into steps, build a small version early, and get it reviewed. If I'm stuck for too long, I'd ask."
Common mistakes
- Saying yes and struggling silently for days.
- Asking for help before trying anything.
- Not checking what done looks like.
