A company's sales (in ₹ crore) were 120 in 2021, 150 in 2022, 180 in 2023, 165 in 2024 and 210 in 2025. In which year was the percentage growth over the previous year highest, and what was the average sales figure?
2025, with 27.27% growth (45 on 165). Growth was 25% in 2022, 20% in 2023 and -8.33% in 2024. The average sales over the five years is 825 / 5 = ₹165 crore.
Explain it simply
The biggest jump in rupees is not always the biggest jump in percentage, because the base changes every year. 2022 and 2023 both added ₹30 crore, but the 2023 rise came on a bigger base, so its percentage is smaller. Always divide the change by the previous year's value.
Example
Data (₹ crore): 2021: 120, 2022: 150, 2023: 180, 2024: 165, 2025: 210.
| Year | Change | % growth |
|---|---|---|
| 2022 | +30 | 30/120 = 25% |
| 2023 | +30 | 30/150 = 20% |
| 2024 | -15 | -15/180 = -8.33% |
| 2025 | +45 | 45/165 = 27.27% |
- Highest growth: 2025 (27.27%).
- Total = 120 + 150 + 180 + 165 + 210 = 825. Average = ₹165 crore.
const s = [120, 150, 180, 165, 210];
const g = s.slice(1).map((v, i) => (((v - s[i]) / s[i]) * 100).toFixed(2));
console.log(g); // Output: ["25.00","20.00","-8.33","27.27"]
console.log(s.reduce((a, b) => a + b) / s.length); // Output: 165What to say in the interview
"I compute each year's change over the previous year's value. 2025 grew 45 on 165, about 27.3%, beating 2022's 25%. The five-year average is 825 over 5, which is 165 crore."
Common mistakes
- Choosing the year with the biggest rupee change and ignoring the base.
- Dividing by the current year's value instead of the previous year's.
