  • For posts assessed through written examinations, RITES organizes an All-India Computer-Based Test (CBT) delivered in bilingual format (English and Hindi). The test structure is divided into two major components: Core Technical Discipline (60% weightage) and Executive / General Aptitude (40% weightage):

1. Civil Engineering Syllabus

  • Civil engineering forms the largest operational vertical in RITES. The syllabus aligns closely with the GATE Civil Engineering syllabus and Indian Railway standard codes:
  • Structural Engineering: Engineering Mechanics, Strength of Materials, Theory of Structures, Design of Concrete Structures (IS 456), Design of Steel Structures (IS 800), Prestressed Concrete, and Earthquake Resistant Design.
  • Transportation & Railway Engineering: Geometric design of railways and highways, permanent way components (sleepers, rails, ballast, fastenings), points and crossings, signaling and interlocking, airport runway design, and pavement materials.
  • Geotechnical & Soil Engineering: Soil mechanics, soil classification, shear strength, bearing capacity of shallow and deep foundations, earth pressure theories, slope stability, and ground improvement techniques.
  • Water Resources & Environmental Engineering: Fluid mechanics, open channel flow, hydraulics, hydrology, water supply engineering, wastewater treatment, and environmental impact assessments (EIA).
  • Construction Management: PERT/CPM scheduling, estimation and costing, specifications, contract administration, and project monitoring.

2. Mechanical Engineering Syllabus

  • Thermodynamics & Thermal Engineering: Laws of thermodynamics, Rankine/Brayton cycles, I.C. Engines, Heat and Mass Transfer, refrigeration and air-conditioning (HVAC).
  • Fluid Mechanics & Turbomachinery: Fluid statics and kinematics, Bernoulli’s equation, boundary layer theory, hydraulic pumps, compressors, and turbines.
  • Manufacturing & Industrial Engineering: Metal casting, forming, welding, machining operations, metrology and inspection, non-destructive testing (NDT/UT), inventory control, and production planning.
  • Machine Design & Mechanics: Mechanics of materials, vibrations, kinematics of mechanisms, design of machine elements (gears, bearings, springs, shafts).

3. Electrical Engineering Syllabus

  • Power Systems & Traction: Power generation, transmission and distribution, 25 kV AC railway traction systems, substation design, fault analysis, and switchgear protection.
  • Electrical Machines: Single-phase and three-phase transformers, induction motors, synchronous machines, DC motors, and traction drives.
  • Control Systems & Power Electronics: Transfer functions, transient and steady-state analysis, Bode plots, thyristors, inverters, choppers, and Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs).
  • Analog & Digital Electronics: Operational amplifiers, microprocessors, logic gates, sensors, and SCADA automation systems.

4. General Aptitude, Reasoning & English Syllabus

  • Quantitative Aptitude: Arithmetic progression, percentages, profit & loss, ratio & proportion, time & work, speed-distance-time, data interpretation (bar graphs, pie charts), and algebra.
  • Logical & Analytical Reasoning: Syllogisms, coding-decoding, blood relations, seating arrangements, series completion, direction sense, and non-verbal reasoning.
  • General Awareness & Railway Infrastructure: Current national and international affairs, Indian economy, geography, environmental issues, Indian Railways history, modernization schemes (Vande Bharat, Bullet Train, DFC), and basic science.
  • English Language: Vocabulary, grammar, reading comprehension, sentence correction, synonyms-antonyms, idioms and phrases.
