What is git rerere?

SHORT ANSWER

rerere means reuse recorded resolution. When enabled, Git remembers how you resolved a conflict and applies the same fix automatically if the same conflict appears again, such as during repeated rebases.

Explain it simply

Imagine solving the same maths problem again and again because the question paper keeps repeating. rerere is the answer key that Git writes down after your first solve.

Enable with git config --global rerere.enabled true. After you resolve a conflict and commit, Git stores the conflicted text and your resolution. When the identical conflict reappears, for example while rebasing a long-lived branch several times or after abandoning and redoing a merge, Git fills in your earlier fix. You still stage and continue. Records live in .git/rr-cache.

Example

bash
git config --global rerere.enabled true
git rebase main # resolve conflicts once
git rebase main # later: Resolved 'app.js' using previous resolution.

What to say in the interview

"rerere records how I resolved a conflict and reapplies it when the same conflict shows up again, which helps with repeated rebases of long-lived branches. I enable it with rerere.enabled true."
