What is a draft pull request, and when would you use one?

SHORT ANSWER

A draft PR signals that work is in progress and cannot be merged yet. It lets you share code early, run CI, and get feedback, then you click Ready for review when it is done.

Explain it simply

A draft is a rough sketch you show a teacher before finishing the painting, to check you are heading the right way.

Open the PR as a draft when you want early comments on the approach, CI results, or a visible record of progress. Reviewers know not to expect a polished change, and the merge button is disabled. When finished, mark it Ready for review, which notifies reviewers and enables merging, subject to branch protection rules.

Example

Create pull request v -> Create draft pull request
... later ...
Button: Ready for review

What to say in the interview

"A draft PR is shared work in progress that cannot be merged. I use it to get early feedback and run CI, and switch it to Ready for review when I want a formal review."
