What does 'Your branch is ahead of origin/main by 2 commits' mean?

SHORT ANSWER

You have two local commits that are not on the remote yet. Nothing is wrong. Run git push to publish them. If it says behind, the remote has commits you do not have yet.

Explain it simply

Think of messages typed on your phone while offline. Two are waiting in the outbox; the server has not received them.

Git compares your main with your last known origin/main. 'Ahead by 2' means your branch has two extra commits. 'Behind by 3' means the remote has three you lack, so pull. 'Diverged' means both are true, so you need to merge or rebase. Remember the comparison uses your last fetch, so run git fetch for a current answer.

Example

text
$ git status
On branch main
Your branch is ahead of 'origin/main' by 2 commits.
  (use "git push" to publish your local commits)

$ git push

What to say in the interview

"It means I have two local commits not yet on the remote, so I push them. If I were behind I would pull, and if diverged I would merge or rebase. The numbers use my last fetch, so I fetch first for accuracy."
