Interview Q&A / Git & GitHub

Why don't tags appear on GitHub after git push, and how do you push them?

SHORT ANSWER

git push does not send tags by default. Push one with git push origin v1.0, or all with git push --tags. Tags are not created on the remote until you do this.

Explain it simply

Think of posting a parcel: the parcel (your commits) goes, but the label you stuck on your own copy stays home unless you send it separately.

After you tag locally, GitHub knows nothing about it. git push origin v1.0 publishes a single tag, which is the safest. git push --tags sends all local tags, including ones you made by mistake. Pushing --follow-tags sends only annotated tags that point at commits being pushed. To remove one remotely, use git push origin --delete v1.0.

Example

bash
git tag -a v1.2 -m "Release 1.2"
git push origin v1.2
git push --follow-tags
git push origin --delete v1.2

What to say in the interview

"Tags are not pushed with normal commits. I push a specific tag with git push origin tagname, or use --follow-tags for annotated tags. Deleting a remote tag needs git push origin --delete tagname."
