What is a knowledge cutoff, and how does it affect an LLM's answers?

SHORT ANSWER

The cutoff is the point after which the training data contains nothing, so the model does not know later events unless they are given in the prompt or fetched by a tool. It may also answer confidently as if the world stopped at that date.

Explain it simply

Picture someone who returns from six months at a remote research station. They are smart, but they have missed the news. If you ask about last week's match result, a careful person says "I was away", while a careless one guesses.

An LLM is similar. Its knowledge comes from data collected up to a date, and it is then used for a long time afterwards. Questions about recent events, new library versions, fresh exam notifications or today's date can get stale or invented answers.

Fixes are practical: put the current date and the needed facts in the prompt, connect a search or database tool, or use retrieval over documents you keep up to date. Also, models are often unsure of their own cutoff, so do not ask them to tell you precisely.

Example

text
Question: What is the latest stable version of this framework?
Risky: model answers from old training data.
Better: app searches the release page, passes the text to the model,
and asks it to answer only from that text.

What to say in the interview

"A knowledge cutoff means the model has no training knowledge after that date. For anything time-sensitive I would ground it with retrieval or a tool and inject the current date, instead of trusting its memory."

Common mistakes

  • Assuming the model knows today's date.
  • Treating a confident tone as proof of freshness.
