  1. In a 1 km race, A beats B by 100 m and B beats C by 100 m. By how many metres does A beat C?

    190 m. When A runs 1,000 m, B runs 900 m. When B runs 1,000 m, C runs 900 m, so when B runs 900 m, C runs 810 m. Hence A beats C by 1,000 - 810 = 190 m.

  3. In how many ways can 6 people sit around a round table? In how many of these do two particular friends sit together?

    120 ways in total, since circular arrangements of n people number (n - 1)! = 5! = 120. With two friends together, treat them as one unit: (5 - 1)! x 2 = 24 x 2 = 48 ways.

  8. Ten years ago, A was half as old as B. If the ratio of their present ages is 3 : 4, what is the sum of their present ages?

    35 years. Present ages 3x and 4x. Ten years ago: 3x - 10 = (4x - 10)/2, so 6x - 20 = 4x - 10 and x = 5. Ages are 15 and 20.

  13. What is the largest square tile that can pave a floor 15 m 17 cm long and 9 m 2 cm wide, and how many such tiles are needed?

    Convert to centimetres: 1517 and 902. HCF(1517, 902) = 41, so the largest tile is 41 cm by 41 cm. Tiles needed = (1517/41) x (902/41) = 37 x 22 = 814.

  16. Which is the next year after 2025 that will have exactly the same calendar as 2025?

2031. Two years share a calendar when they start on the same weekday and are both leap or both non-leap. Adding odd days from 2025 onward (1, 1, 1, 2, 1, 1) reaches 7 after 2030, so 2031 starts on the same day as 2025 (Wednesday) and is also a non-leap year.

  18. A boat's speed in still water is 15 km/h. It goes 30 km upstream and returns in 4 hours 30 minutes. What is the speed of the stream?

    5 km/h. Solve 30/(15 - s) + 30/(15 + s) = 4.5. This gives 900/(225 - s^2) = 4.5, so 225 - s^2 = 200 and s = 5. Check: 30/10 + 30/20 = 3 + 1.5 = 4.5 hours.

  24. The minute hand of a clock overtakes the hour hand every 64 minutes of correct time. How much does the clock gain or lose in a day?

It gains 32 8/11 minutes a day. In a correct clock the hands meet every 65 5/11 minutes. Here they meet after only 64 real minutes, so the clock runs fast: it shows 65 5/11 minutes in 64 real minutes, gaining 16/11 minutes every 64 minutes, which is 360/11 = 32 8/11 minutes in 1,440 minutes.
